Research Club on Surveillance and Climate

The Research Club on Surveillance and Climate brings together researchers and postgraduate students who are involved or interested in research on the impact of climate on health and aims to strengthen academic and scientific cooperation in Latin America. Through these collaborations, the Club seeks to:
- Develop and apply advanced space-time modelling approaches to understand the incidence and distribution of climate-sensitive health outcomes in different regional contexts;
- Support the training of new researchers;
- Consolidate technical capacity in health modelling;
- Contribute to the development of public policies focused on surveillance and on mitigating the effects of climate change on population health.
Associated with the Calmas Project – Climate and Latin America: Modelling Health Outcomes, the Club focuses on arboviral diseases, viral respiratory diseases and diarrhoea, with special attention to border areas. Meetings, held in Portuguese, take place every two months and last 1h30.

Article - A statistical model for forecasting probabilistic epidemic bands for dengue cases in Brazil
The article presents the development of a model to forecast dengue in Brazil, classifying outbreaks into different risk levels and forecasting a typical season for 2024-2025, in contrast with previous years, which were atypical and exceptionally high.

Infodengue
InfoDengue is an early-warning system for arboviral diseases based on hybrid data generated through the integrated analysis of data mined from social web platforms and climatic and epidemiological data.
Infogripe
Based on data obtained from the Influenza Epidemiological Surveillance Information System (SIVEP-Gripe) of the Brazilian Ministry of Health, InfoGripe produces weekly forecasts and analyses of the behaviour of these syndromes, identifying trends of increasing or decreasing cases in different regions of the country using statistical models.
Mosqlimate
Mosqlimate is a multidisciplinary tool for multiple diseases with two main objectives:
- To estimate the probabilities of changes in disease transmission patterns in response to climatic and land-use variations;
- To identify circulating viruses during outbreaks when the available information is incomplete.
Observatory of Climate and Health - Fiocruz
The Observatory of Climate and Health aims to bring together and share information, technologies and knowledge to support the development of researcher networks and studies that assess the impacts of environmental and climatic changes on the health of the Brazilian population.
VigiFronteiras-Brasil Programme | Training in Health Surveillance
The VigiFronteiras-Brasil Programme, an initiative of Fiocruz in partnership with the Secretariat of Health Surveillance of the Ministry of Health and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), aims to train masters and PhD graduates to contribute to strengthening health surveillance actions and services in Brazilian border regions and neighbouring countries.
