Working Meeting: Strengthening Nursing Research Projects at Hospital Escuela through Data Clinics in Research Ethics.
On July 31, 2025, a meeting was held in the Boardroom of the Department of Pathology, second floor of the Medical-Surgical Building at Hospital Escuela. The meeting was convened by the Research and Academic Management Unit with the objective of presenting the Hospital Escuela Research Ethics Committee (CEI-HE). https://lac.tghn.org/actividades-y-eventos/otras-actividades-lac/conformacion-del-comite-de-etica-en-investigacion-del-hospital-escuela-ceihe/
The Antonio Vidal Institute of Infectious Diseases and Parasitology (IAV), in collaboration with the Research and Academic Management Unit, offers an orientation and guidance service in research ethics known as the “Data Clinic.” It is aimed at health professionals from the various health areas working at Hospital Escuela. https://lac.tghn.org/actividades-y-eventos/clinica-de-datos-es/clinica-de-datos-en-etica-de-la-investigacion-en-el-hospital-escuela-2025/.
This initiative is part of The Global Health Network Latin America and the Caribbean (TGHN LAC https://lac.tghn.org/) project and promotes ethical and high-quality research through individualized guidance sessions at key moments of research projects, providing support in ethical aspects related to research topics, strengthening research capacities among health professionals, fostering their professional development, and contributing to the generation of knowledge in the health field.
During the meeting, members of the Hospital Escuela Research Club and students of the Diploma in Systematization of Health Experiences participated, receiving guidance on the steps to follow for submitting research protocols to the CEI-HE and requesting institutional endorsement from the Research and Academic Management Unit.
Submitting a research protocol to a research ethics committee is a fundamental step in any investigation involving human beings, animals, or sensitive data. It is not just a procedure but a guarantee that the research will be conducted responsibly, respectfully, and with scientific rigor. On the other hand, institutional endorsement in health research is a document processed within an institution (such as a hospital, university, or health center) where the research is being conducted, certifying that formal authorization has been granted to carry out the study within its facilities, with its staff or patients. Institutional endorsement is independent but complementary to the approval of the Research Ethics Committee. Both are usually required before initiating any research. Together, institutional endorsement and ethical approval are essential, especially in the health field, because they fulfill distinct but complementary functions that ensure the integrity, legality, and validity of the study.
As part of the commitments made, it was agreed that on August 12 a session will be held to present and discuss the research profiles currently being developed at Hospital Escuela.
