Research Club on Neuroinfections and Neuroimmunology

Members | Inaugural webinar | Activities | Resources | HTLV

The Research Club on Neuroinfections and Neuroimmunology brings together researchers and undergraduate and graduate students to share and develop research based on the connection between basic research and health innovations, focusing on the following topics:

  • Idiopathic neuroimmunological diseases (of unknown cause);
  • Post-infectious and para-infectious neurological manifestations of viral pathogens.

Club Logo. Illustration of a blue brain. The left half has three green viruses. The brain is surrounded by text

The Club was created to continue the network established from the NeuroCOVID Study: Association of SARS-CoV-2 with the emergence, prognosis and pathogenesis of cerebrovascular diseases and other neurological manifestations.

In monthly virtual meetings, members present and discuss data and analyses from the NeuroCOVID Study and other ongoing studies, and attempt to propose new projects with collected samples and produced data, as well as expand the scope of work with new collaborations and projects.

The Research Club on Neuroinfections and Neuroimmunology aims to:

  • Expand the scope of its work beyond the neurological manifestations of SARS-CoV-2
  • Stimulate knowledge of the scientific frontier of neurobiology and diagnostic and treatment technologies
  • Be a creative and collaborative environment for new research projects
  • Be a learning environment and exchange of experiences for undergraduate and graduate students
  • Consolidate and maintain a working group at the scientific frontier of neurological data in health emergencies

Inaugural Webinar of the Research Club on Neuroinfections and Neuroimmunology

What is the role of new non-invasive biomarkers in diagnosing neuronal damage? Watch the discussion on this topic at the inaugural webinar of the Research Club on Neuroinfections and Neuroimmunology, entitled "Methodological foundations and applicability of SiMoA (single molecule array)" and learn about SiMoA, an ultra-sensitive test for measuring neurofilament light chain in multiple sclerosis.

The webinar, which took place on October 19, 2023, promoted a discussion aimed at including ideas for future projects using SiMoA for early detection of neuronal damage caused by infection with emerging and re-emerging pathogens (e.g., COVID and HTLV), as well as the need to seek funding for research in these areas.

Resource Library

REDCap Project - REDCap is a secure web application for building and managing online surveys and databases. While REDCap can be used to collect virtually any type of data in any environment, it is specifically geared to support online and offline data capture for research studies and operations. The REDCap Consortium, composed of thousands of active institutional partners in over one hundred countries, supports individual REDCap systems worldwide.

REDCap Brazil - REDCap was created in 2004 by researchers at Vanderbilt University (Tennessee, USA). It receives financial support from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and technical support from the REDCap Consortium, comprising over 2,600 institutions across 117 countries on 6 continents. REDCap was introduced in Brazil in 2011 through the University of São Paulo Medical School. Today, the REDCap Brazil Consortium officially represents the tool in the country with over 100 renowned institutions.

Fiocruz REDCap Community - The Fiocruz REDCap Community offers various valuable resources designed to facilitate the use and understanding of this data collection platform.

Data Management and REDCap Course - A course on Biomedical Research Data, its management and security, and the use of the REDCap platform for this purpose.

Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium (CDISC) - CDISC is a non-profit organization that coordinates a global consortium for the standardization of clinical research data, developing guidelines, events, and training.

Fiocruz Clinical Research Network YouTube - Official channel of the Fiocruz Clinical Research Network (RFPC), which aims to publish videos of interest to Fiocruz clinical research professionals and the general public.

Research in Clinical Practice Workshop 2021 - This workshop focused on training healthcare professionals and researchers to identify collaboration opportunities by implementing research projects within routine clinical practice. Collaboration is essential in Brazil, where most research institutions and laboratories are disconnected from healthcare services. The workshop aims to spark research interest among healthcare professionals working in Brazilian public hospitals, with a routine focus on patient care.

Webinar: COVID-19 and Stroke - What are the most pressing challenges? - Webinar led by members of the WHO NeuroCOVID Forum (Dr. Alessandro Padovani and Dr. Lucia Brito) and Fiocruz (Dr. Cristiane Bresani) to discuss challenges and ideas for investigating cerebrovascular manifestations potentially related to COVID-19. Panelists shared their expertise, including a multicenter case-control study on the association between stroke and SARS-CoV-2 infection conducted by Fiocruz in Brazil. This session was open to anyone interested in clinical research, neurology, and COVID-19.

Guillain-Barré Syndrome Toolkit - Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a rare but potentially life-threatening immune-mediated disorder of peripheral nerves and nerve roots, often triggered by infections. A ten-step approach has been developed to help physicians worldwide treat GBS patients.

Neuro Zika 2019 Workshop - Toolkit with various resources on neurological syndromes related to arbovirus infection.

NeuroID Elearning - E-learning modules on infectious neurological diseases are designed for physicians at all levels, from undergraduates to senior consultants and academics. Each module begins with an overview, moves to specific resources, and concludes with key points followed by a self-assessment test.

Global Brain Health Clinical Exchange Platform - An interactive platform featuring clinical exchange workshops on brain health.

NeuroPACES YouTube - The NeuroPACES course is an intensive 1-day clinical course for candidates preparing for the MRCP PACES examination. The program features a wide range of neurology clinical cases that may be encountered in the PACES exam, offered by The Walton Centre Clinical Neurology.

Encephalitis assessment tools are a selection of educational materials developed by Brain Infections Global.

International Retrovirology Association (IRVA) - Through its various approaches, IRVA aims to promote research on HTLV infections and related diseases.

HTLV Aware - The HTLV Aware community aims to promote effective strategies to prevent transmission of one of the most potent human carcinogens, human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1).

HTLV Channel YouTube - Created by Tatiane Assone and Carolina Rosadas, this channel aims to raise awareness about HTLV infection and related scientific research.
