Opening Ceremony of the XV Multidisciplinary Congress of Graduate Programs and the XXXII Congress of Medical Specialties, UNAH, September 2026

On September 2, 2026, the opening ceremony was held for the main annual scientific event of the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH), which this year is hosting the XV Multidisciplinary Congress of Graduate Studies and the XXXII Congress of Medical Specialties from September 1 to 4, 2026, at the University Campus in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

The opening ceremony took place in the Alma Mater Auditorium and was attended by the university’s top officials: Dr. Odir Fernández, Rector; Dr. Nahun Puerto, General Coordinator of Postgraduate Studies at the Faculty of Medical Sciences; and Dr. Francisco Samayoa, representing the Dean´s Office of the Faculty of Medical Sciences.  Also in attendance was Dr. Maria Angela Ayala, representing the Honduran Ministry of Health.

The opening lecture was presented by Dr. Jackeline Alger, executive director of the Antonio Vidal Institute of Infectious Diseases and Parasitology.  The lecture, titled “The Importance of Scientific Research in Health Sciences Specialty Training,” focused on scientific research as an essential component of human resource development, particularly in resource-constrained settings where research findings help inform decision-making, optimize scarce resources, adapt interventions to local realities, bridge implementation gaps, promote equity, and strengthen public trust. In her presentation, Dr. Alger highlighted the important role of the Hospital Escuela’s Research and Academic Management Unit, which, through the Global Health Network Latin America and the Caribbean (TGHN LAC) project, provides various training opportunities for students and educators, including data clinics, mentoring programs, research clubs, guided learning sessions, webinars, workshops, and twinning activities.

Over the course of the four-day conference, 71 research studies will be presented, along with a series of relevant clinical cases. We join in congratulating the event’s organizing team, led by Dr. Cecilia E. Varela, a faculty member in the Postgraduate Program in Internal Medicine.
