Colloquium on Scientific Integrity: a joint activity by the Central American Snake Initiative, the Ixchel Project, and the Antonio Vidal Institute
On March 20, 2025, a space for exchange was held as part of the periodic virtual activity titled Colloquium on Philosophy of Science, coordinated by the Central American Snake Initiative and the Ixchel Project. This session of the colloquium focused on scientific integrity and featured a presentation on promoting integrity and accountability in research, delivered by members of the Antonio Vidal Institute, Honduras. The Central American Snake Initiative brings together professionals, technical staff, students, and community members from Central American countries interested in advancing a comprehensive approach to the issue of snakebite envenoming in the region. The Colloquium included participants from Costa Rica, Mexico, and Honduras.
This Colloquium aimed to present some core elements of scientific integrity and discuss how organized groups, including the Central American Snake Initiative and the Ixchel Project, can promote integrity and accountability in research. The presentation defined scientific integrity, described its components, discussed different activities to foster research integrity and responsibility, emphasized responsible authorship, and shared experiences in training and supporting research development through The Global Health Network Latin America and the Caribbean (TGHN LAC) and the Hospital Escuela in Honduras. The event concluded with an open discussion and final reflections. Key points highlighted during the discussion included the importance of promoting scientific integrity among early-career researchers through role modeling and mentorship, the provision of training and professional development opportunities, and the responsible use and proper acknowledgment of technologies such as artificial intelligence. At the end of the session, participants and members of various institutions were invited to join and use the courses, resources, and tools available through the TGHN LAC knowledge platform (https://lac.tghn.org/).
