The study Birth in Brazil II is a Pathfinderilot and is part of the research project "A New Ecosystem for Health Research & Data Science" (Um novo ecossistema para pesquisa em saúde e ciência de dados), which aims to strengthen the fields of Data Science and data sharing for health research in Latin America and the Caribbean, based on the strategic participation of the Fiocruz Hub of The Global Health Network.
Birth in Brazil II is a national survey on births, deliveries and foetal losses and has several axes of investigation. The main objectives of the study include estimating the prevalence of injuries and risk factors during pregnancy, evaluating prenatal, childbirth and foetal loss care, analysing the main maternal and perinatal outcomes and promoting an investigation into the factors associated with them. It also includes analyses on maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality, COVID-19 in pregnancy and paternal emotional disorders.
The Birth in Brazil II projects are part of a family of initiatives that seek to examine the conditions and circumstances of pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period in Brazil, together with Birth in Brazil, Birth Healthy, Birth in Prisons and Evaluation of the Stork Network. They are conducted by the Research Group on Women's, Children's and Adolescents' Health, belonging to the Department of Epidemiology and Quantitative Methods in Health, National School of Public Health Sergio Arouca - ENSP, Fiocruz - RJ, in collaboration with researchers from various scientific institutions in the country.
Due to its scope, relevance, and pioneering nature (Birth in Brazil was the first national survey on childbirth and births in the country), Birth in Brazil II was invited to participate in the Pathfinder pilot study as a way to explore its potential to generate learnings and reflexions that may be of great value for the development of health research in Brazil and worldwide.
Initiated in October 2022, the Pathfinder implementation process was planned to take place in four stages, each with different actions to be carried out throughout 2023:
Creation of a conceptual framework;
Systematisation of experience;
Toolkit prototyping;
Implementation and evaluation of products.
The mapping of Birth in Brazil II focused on activities related to Research Planning. The categories originally present in the Tracker had to be broken down to accommodate the complexity of the project and faithfully reproduce the structure that the study itself defined for completing this stage. Most of the information was obtained by collecting, organising, and systematising the available documentary material, being complemented by conversation circles and individual interviews with key research actors.
Timeline of the construction of the pathfinder Birth in Brazil II
Three conversation circles and six individual interviews were held between September and December 2023.
Themes worked on:
Development of the research protocol (06/09) - target population, sampling plan, selection of women, data collection, financing and fundraising, ethics committees and impact: six participants
Identification of research questions (22/09, 23/11) - Development of collection instruments (hospital interview, medical record, hospital structure, pregnant woman's notebook, foetal loss, first follow-up interview, second follow-up interview, paternal health, and health professionals): eight participants
Team and training (15/09, 22/09 and 30/11) - Selection, training, skills, tools, certification, communication activities: six participants
State Coordination (27/11, 28/11 and 05/12) - Contacts with government agencies, ethics committees, participating institutions, obtaining approval and consent, team selection, organisation, logistics and field conduction: three participants
Dashboard of agents and stakeholders in the Birth in Brazil II study
Birth in Brazil II mobilises many actors (agents) and institutions to ensure the accomplishment of research throughout the country. The internal structure requires qualified professionals and organisation to perform functions according to each stage of the study. Check out the Dashboard with data on the performance of the 759 actors (agents) and interest groups (stakeholders) involved in Birth in Brazil II. The panel represents the cut of those involved in the study up to December 2023, a period in which the Data Analysis Stage is in the preliminary phase and will continue with conduction in 2024.
The panel is interactive and can be explored with the mouse cursor. You can use filters by clicking on the data you want to view or on the "+ Add filter" button.
