Coordinating Centre: Instituto de Enfermedades Infecciosas y Parasitologia Antonio Vidal

The Instituto de Enfermedades Infecciosas y Parasitologia Antonio Vidal (Antonio Vidal Institute of Infectious Diseases and Parasitology, IAV) is a private non-profit foundation. The IAV is committed to the development and promotion of research, training, and consultation activities on infectious diseases and parasitology, assisting government and university institutions in their healthcare, administrative, technical, and teaching functions, to contribute to clinical-epidemiological diagnosis, management, control, and prevention of these diseases and to improve the health of affected populations.  

Mission 

We are a private non-profit organization committed to the development and promotion of research, training and consulting activities on infectious diseases and parasitology, assisting government and university institutions in their care, administrative, technical, and teaching functions, to contribute to the clinical-epidemiological diagnosis, management, control and prevention of these diseases and to improve the health of the affected populations.  

Vision 

To become a reference Institute for research and training of human resources in surveillance, prevention, and control of infectious diseases and parasitology with national and international projection, whose activities are integrated into health actions that improve human health.

Maria Alejandra Ramos

Maria Alejandra Ramos

Clinical Endocrinologist, Internal Medicine Department, Hospital Escuela, Tegucigalpa, Honduras

As the department head she has lead innovation in the implementation of technology and coordinates a transdisciplinary research group to manage endocrine conditions and create guidelines for the approach to endocrine disorders.

She is also responsible for Interinstitutional Operations Unit at the Hospital Escuela, coordinating interinstitutional projects for the hospital development. She combines her clinical and patient tending duties with teaching, and research activities with different initiatives locally and regionally. She also participates in mentoring internal medicine fellows and professionals performing health research. She is also participating as co-investigator for Florida State University’s Global Health Consortium and its liaison in Honduras

Specialist in internal medicine and infectious diseases, chief of the Infectious Diseases Services, and in charge of direction of the Integrated Health Care Services for people living with HIV, Hospital Escuela, Honduras

Diana Varela is a specialist in internal medicine and infectious diseases, chief of the Infectious Diseases Services, and in charge of direction of the Integrated Health Care Services for people living with HIV at the Hospital Escuela, the main public hospital in Honduras. She is also member of the "Instituto de Enfermedades Infecciosas y Parasitologia Antonio Vidal" (IAV), a non-profit organization devoted to training, advising, and conducting research in the field of infectious diseases and parasitology. She also participates actively in the education on the diagnosis and management of infectious diseases of postgraduate program residents that rotate on regular basis in the Infectology Service, Hospital Escuela.

Jackeline Alger is a parasitologist working in the Department of Clinical Laboratory at the main public health hospital, University Hospital (Hospital Escuela) in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. She is the Executive Director of the Instituto de Enfermedades Infecciosas y Parasitologia Antonio Vidal (IAV), a non-profit organization devoted to training, advising, and conducting research in the field of infectious diseases and parasitology. She combines clinical laboratory work, teaching, and research activities with mentoring health students and professionals performing health research. These activities are critical for building interdisciplinary bridges, promoting international collaboration, and networking to advance scientific research and social innovation for health in Honduras.
